Thanks to social media, everyone has a voice. It's likely that a conversation taking place right now somewhere in social media about your business, its products and services - or, at the very least, about your industry.

It's imperative that you extend your voice and enter the conversation - or start one if it does not currently exist. That's where content marketing plays a role.

If you have Powerpoint decks, PDFs, research reports, product sales sheets, whitepapers, videos, images, infographics, audio files or other such collateral that's sitting on your website and is publicly viewable, you should consider putting that content in places where it can be easily found and easily shared.

For many, the idea of creating a social media marketing campaign is tantamount to launching a moon shot. They view social media as some type of alien orbital body that has to be landed on, its landscape searched, analyzed and understood before being used. It doesn't have to be that way.

There's been a lot of talk lately about Twitter, some of which was good and some not so good.

The Good - Almost every SuperBowl XLVII ad contained a Twitter hashtag, which resulted in pundits suggesting that Twitter is the channel for integrating social media and television.

The Not So Good - Burger King and Jeep Twitter accounts were hacked earlier this week, which led to concern over the social network's authentication practices.

Based on these events, this week's Five for Friday focuses on ways businesses can use Twitter.

The number one goal of any email marketing campaign is to convert list members into customers (or repeat customers as the case may be). In order for that to happen, they have to first open your email, and in order for that to happen something has to capture their attention and motivate them to click. That "something" is your email subject line.

In an article entitled "The Case for Marketing in the Municipal Sector," author Jim Mintz, Managing Partner of the Centre of Excellence for Public Sector Marketing, said: "Marketing is universally recognized as one of the most important elements in business management. In the economically challenging twenty-first century, it may also become one of the most important functions of city management."

If what Mintz says is true, in what ways should municipalities be marketing themselves? How can a website help?

I just read a disturbing statistic - nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of businesses do not have a website. Another 25 percent are invisible online. Do a search on their name and they cannot be found!

In today's online-centric culture where Google has become the new Yellow Pages, to have no web presence at all just doesn't make sense.

There has been a lot of buzz around Lafayette over two topics: being voted #1 asSouthern Living's Tastiest Town, and a grassroots effort started by local resident, Aileen Bennett, called the Do Good Project

While I hope you'll vote for Lafayette as the "tastiest town," it's the second buzz-worthy topic I want to address in this post.

Facebook has a very strict set of policies regarding who can set up what on its network. Essentially, it comes down to one of two options:

1. Individuals create Profiles
2. Businesses create Pages

Notice that both terms - Profiles and Pages - are capitalized. They are part of Facebook's network vocabulary and, thus, used a proper nouns. Unfortunately, the difference between the two are not always clearly defined, which is why many business inadvertently set up Profiles rather than Pages.

Social media is playing an increasing important role in how businesses communicate and that now includes the way press releases are syndicated.

Called Social Media News Releases (SMNR), these services place an emphasis on distributing content to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter in order to reach a more socially-connected audience.

Facebook is obsessed with branded fan pages, and for good reason says technology blog GigaOm. According to a recent study, they do a better job of converting the social network's users into customers than any other form of advertising on Facebook.

"If content is king, then conversion is queen." -- John Munsell, CEO Bizzuka

In the fall of 2008, Bizzuka CEO John Munsell shared that quote - which was his own creation - during a conference where he served as a panelist in a session on the topic of web content management. It was tweeted by one person. Since then, it has been tweeted and retreated thousands of times and in a number of languages.

I have long been an advocate of using blogs and email as complementary online marketing strategies. Blogs serve a customer acquisition function, while email serves a customer retention role. Due to their makeup, blogs also have special SEO appeal. (Someone once said the word "blog" stands for "Better Listings On Google.")

In a manner similar to what Facebook did a couple of years ago, Google announced last week that it is launching Pages for business in its Google+ social network. The question that arises is whether this has any real benefit for business, especially small business.
